Over the last decade, cremation has become the preferred funeral option in the United States. By 2040, it’s expected that cremation will represent an astonishing 80% of all end-of-life dispositions in this country.

As more people choose cremation, the range of personalized memorialization options keeps growing, too. From the customary to the avant garde, there’s an option for every taste and budget. In the following article, we’ll explore some interesting and clever ways you can use your loved one’s cremated ashes.

Traditional cremation urns. The selection of a cremation container is an important one. A wide variety of styles, colors and materials is available, along with customized embellishments, so you can choose something that’s as unique and special as the individual it represents. From elaborate ceramic urns to intricately carved wooden containers to durable marble vessels, you’re sure to find the perfect expression for your loved one’s remains.

Biodegradable urns. Also known as eco urns, these containers are designed to decompose over time when exposed to the elements. They’re a fitting choice for environmentalists and nature lovers alike. Like traditional urns, biodegradable urns are available in many shapes, sizes, materials and colors, so there’s never a need to compromise on your preferences.

Burial. Interment is a good choice for those who prefer cremation but still wish to have a special place to visit. For those who are Catholic, it’s worth noting that this the only church-sanctioned option for cremated ashes. Burial allows you to preserve your loved one’s memory in an in-ground space bearing a bronze marker or headstone. This choice offers the ability to visit them on special occasions such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and other significant events.

Cremation jewelry. Also called memorial jewelry, funeral jewelry or remembrance jewelry, cremation jewelry is a beautiful way to keep a deceased loved one close. From necklaces to rings to bracelets are more, there’s no shortage of options. Cremation pieces come in all shapes, styles, sizes and price ranges, depending on how you want the piece adorned. Some people go all out with precious metals and gemstones, while others opt for something more basic. Most pieces of cremation jewelry are designed to hold a small portion of cremains, similar to a locket, although some manufacturers actually infuse cremation ashes into the item’s components.

Memorial diamonds. They say diamonds are forever, so what better way to eternally honor your loved one than to create a stunning gem from his or her ashes? The natural geologic process that forms diamonds deep within the earth is replicated using high pressure, high temperature machines. The composition of each memorial diamond is completely unique, and is based on the chemical makeup of the decedent. A memorial diamond is a unique way to immortalize the memory of a loved one who has passed and establish a family heirloom that can be treasured for generations.

Commissioned paintings. Was your loved one an art enthusiast or are you a collector? If so, there are a number of artists who will mix cremated remains into paint and create a masterpiece of your choosing. For example, you might opt for a landscape of your loved one’s favorite place or a portrait of him or her.

Playable vinyl records. If the deceased was a music lover, what better way to honor his or her memory than with a classic vinyl record that plays a favorite soundtrack? Even the cover can be customized with the decedent’s image. It makes a truly unique memorial piece that can live on for many years to come.

Replicated coral reefs. For water lovers and avid marine environmentalists, these simulated coral reefs offer the perfect memorialization solution. Cremated remains are incorporated into a specially designed concrete reef-like terrain that encourages marine life growth when placed in the ocean. It can bring great solace to know that your loved one will be helping to preserve the aquatic environment for future generations.

Glass cremation art objects. These amazing artisans work with glass and other materials that contain cremation ashes to produce strikingly beautiful, handcrafted pieces of art. Keepsake lamps, blown glass paperweights, heart sculptures, and suncatchers are a few of the many options that are available.

Solidified remains. Among the newest form of human and pet remains options, solidified remains resemble a collection of smooth stones. An average sized adult results in approximately 25 – 35 stones. Unique and beautiful, each set naturally varies in size, shape, color, and texture. Their smooth surface is a natural anxiety-buster, providing welcome relief from bereavement stress.
