It’s natural to wonder who is eligible for a military funeral when honoring someone who dedicated their life to serving our country.

When someone who served our country passes away, families often feel both immense pride and a sense of uncertainty about what to do next. We are often asked, “Is my loved one eligible for a military funeral?

At Batchelor Brothers & Jones, we are honored to help families through this complex yet meaningful process. Here’s what you should know about eligibility, what a military funeral includes, and how we can support you every step of the way.

1. What does it mean to have a military funeral?

A military funeral is a ceremony that honors the life and service of a veteran or active-duty service member. It often includes powerful traditions like the folding and presentation of the U.S. flag, the playing of “Taps”, and a uniformed honor guard.

These customs are meant to show gratitude for a lifetime of service and offer comfort and a sense of pride to the family left behind.

2.     Who is eligible for military funeral honors?

In most cases, the following groups are eligible:

  • Active-duty service members who pass away while serving
  • Veterans who served on active duty and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
  • Members of the Selected Reserve or National Guard who completed their service honorably
  • Veterans discharged from the Reserve because of a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty

Every situation is unique, but if your loved one falls into one of these categories, they may qualify for military funeral honors.

3. Who may not qualify for military funeral honors?

There are a few situations where eligibility may not apply. Those include:

  • Veterans who were discharged under dishonorable conditions
  • Individuals who did not complete their service obligation, unless it was because of a disability incurred in the line of duty
  • Certain legal circumstances, including specific criminal convictions, may also affect eligibility

If you’re unsure about your loved one’s status, we can help review their service record and determine whether honors apply.

4. How can I confirm my loved one’s eligibility?

The most common way to confirm eligibility is through military discharge documents, often referred to as a DD Form 214. This form outlines the type of service and discharge.

If you don’t have these records on hand, don’t worry. We can help you request them and coordinate directly with the appropriate branch of service.

5. What does a military funeral include?

Military funeral honors typically include:

  • A ceremonial folding and presentation of the American flag
  • The playing of “Taps” by a bugler or recording
  • An honor guard of at least two members, one or more from the same branch of service as the deceased
  • Depending on the veteran’s rank and available resources, additional honors may be arranged, such as:
  • A rifle detail
  • A flag-bearing color guard
  • Pallbearers
  • A caisson (horse-drawn wagon) or a military flyover

These additions depend on availability, but we can submit requests on your family’s behalf.

6. How much does it cost for a military funeral?

Military funeral honors are provided at no cost to the family when eligibility is met. Certain cemetery or memorial arrangements may have separate costs, but the honors themselves are a benefit earned through service.

7. What other military burial benefits are available?

Eligible veterans and their families may also receive:

  • A U.S. burial flag, provided at no cost
  • A headstone, marker, or medallion from the Veterans’ Administration (VA)
  • A Presidential Memorial Certificate signed by the sitting President

These are meaningful keepsakes and tributes to a life of service.

8. How can Batchelor Brothers & Jones help you through this process?

Navigating military funeral benefits can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Our staff can:

  • Help you gather the paperwork needed to confirm eligibility
  • Coordinate with the appropriate military branch to arrange honors
